ISO 14001 - Environmental Management System Standard, a practical guide to implementing an effective Environmental management system.
ISO 14001 - Environmental Management System Standard

Arguably the three most common standards in the manufacturing industry today is that of the ISO 9001, ISO 45 001 & ISO 14 001 Management System standards.

Just like the ISO 9000 family of standard. ISO 14 000 also has a family of standards. The ISO 14000 family of International environmental management standards are all guideline documents to ensure an organization understand how to implement an effective Environmental management system.

The ISO 14001 standards specify that an organization establish the following:

* Environmental Management Policy
* Determine the impacts of their products or services on the environment
* Plan to develop environmental objectives and targets
* Implement a plan to achieve these objectives and targets
* Implement a PDCA (or Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle to review the corrective action in a typical Management Review Forum or       meeting.

The main purpose of an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System is to:

* Enhance the company's environmental performance
* To assist in achieving your company objective with Environmental goals
* To assist in fulfilling the applicable legal or compliance objectives and guidelines.

ISO 14001 standard is applicable to any organization, regardless of size, type and nature, and applies to the environmental aspects of its activities, products and services.

It is important to note, that the ISO 4001 standard does not specify a specific Environmental performance criteria to the organization, but it is left up to the organization to state its own applicable criteria, goals and objectives.

As mentioned if a previous blog, the ISO 14 001 EMS can easily be integrated into the IMS or "Integrated Management System".

The ISO 14001 standards specify that an organization establish the following:
